New Varsity Football Coach Announced

The Varsity Football team will be led by Jimmy Noonan.  Jimmy was born and raised in Sumter.  He is the product of Sumter High School, where he played three sports including football under Coach Tom Lewis.  In 1987, Coach Noonan and the Gamecocks won the State AAAA Championship, and he played in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas.  Coach Noonan was inducted into the Sumter Sports Hall of Fame in 2013.  Jimmy signed a football scholarship to play fullback at The Citadel, where he graduated with a BS in Mathematics in 1992.  Coach Noonan stayed on with the football program as a Graduate Assistant Coach under Charlie Taaffe for two years.  The 1992 team finished the regular season ranked #1 and won the Southern Conference Championship,

In 1993, Coach Noonan entered the High School ranks by joining the staff at Spring Valley High School.  After one year, he became the Offensive Coordinator and earned his MEd in Educational Leadership from USC; in his sixth year he became the Head Coach at age 29.  After 14 years of teaching and administration, he left Spring Valley and returned home to Sumter for one year as the Head Football Coach of Wilson Hall School.  Coach Noonan then became Head Football Coach/Administrator for 13 years at Wando High School in Mount Pleasant.  Jimmy retired from Georgetown HS as AD/Head Football Coach after three years and joined Lucy Beckham HS in Mt. Pleasant as a ‘Substitute Assistant Principal’ and assistant football coach.  

Coach Noonan was a NFL National Coach of the Year Finalist for the Seattle Seahawks (nominated by former player Michael Boulware), a Carolina Panthers Coach of the Year Finalist, 4A Lower state Coach of the Year twice, the Palmetto Sports Outreach Coach of the Year twice, Region Coach of the Year six times.  Coach Noonan is affiliated with the AFCA and has been the Executive Director of the SC Football Coaches Association since 2021.

Jimmy and his wife, Anne have four children:  Mairin (27), Ashlin (25), Kellan (24), and Ryann (20).  Jimmy is excited to bring a new era of leadership and success to the Swampcats!
